Specialties of Mallorca

Ensaimada mallorquina

Ensaimada is a speciality of Mallorca and consists of eggs, sugar, flour, shortening, water and barm. The process of fabrication is handicraft.
Practicly it is produced all over the island and it is available at many places, especially in the touristic zones.

I had a quite impressing experience when I arrived at the airport of Barcelona in September, before my exchange semester. At the main exit I saw a multiplicity of people passing who were carrying (for me) "strange looking" boxes as hand luggage.
Most had at least 2-3 boxes, some were carrying 10 or so.
Later I was told that this is Ensaimada (!). People from Barcelona who travel to Mallorca take Ensaimada for their family, relatives, colleagues, ...

And this is a demonstration of several other typical food of Mallorca, e.g. "Sobresada" which is a kind of sausage with a creamy consistence and crimson colour:
