Festa means Party

Castells

Last week there was a party organized at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona for all exchange students. It took place at "Placa Cívica", which is somehow the main square of the campus.

During the day all students could enjoy concerts and folclore activities by catalan people for free.

On the pictures you can see "Castells", Catalan for "castle" which are characteristic for Catalonia. "Castells" consist in the building of figures by people. This tradition originates back to the 18th century.
"Castells" are built according to a special technique which varies according to the type of "Castells".
The building of a "Castells" is accompanied by a melody, which indicates the different phases of the figure. The "Toc de castells" is performed by flute "Gralla".

It was really nice to participate in such an event. Seeing so many motivated young people giving their best to successfully perform "Castells" and introducing the audience in Catalan cultural traditions.
